WebLog Query I: Introductory SURVEY
Personal Information
1. Laurel Gibson, Solon, lgibson@stritaschool.com
2. Laurel
3. Undergraduate in Early Childhood obtained at Mount Union College, currently employed at St. Rita School in Solon teaching second graders.
4. I collect Mickey Mouse figurines kind of bizarre but I think they are really neat. I have over 200 of them. I love traveling to Disney World. I also coach freshman girl’s volleyball at Solon and enjoy playing volleyball as well.
Learning Style and more:
5. I am a very type A personality. I like to know what is expected of me. I think Rubrics are great! I am more of a hands-on and visual learner. I like to discuss things as a whole group because I feel I hear unique viewpoints that I would never have thought of.
6. I truly enjoy attending class and only miss if it is an absolute emergency. I feel like if you miss one class you are far behind and you miss too much information. I am shyer but try to participate when I can. I know it is important to get involved in the discussions. I am responsible and always get my readings done and come prepared for class. I try to complete projects pieces at a time and not save it for the last minute. Although to be honest I have waited for the last minute on several occasions. I learn better in a whole group setting and like to have a partner to bounce ideas off of. Working alone is not something I prefer but I will do it. Whenever I do not understand something I make sure I ask someone. I have no shame in asking for help...which sometimes is a good thing and other times not. I dislike being left in the dark. I have to feel confident in what I am doing.

Technology Section
7. I believe the internet was the most important technological invention in history. It has made it possible for us to communicate with individuals all around the world. We are able to access so much and have so many unique tools at our disposal because of it. It is a great way to get information out there for all to see.
8. Cell Phone*, Facebook, Internet, Google Maps, Microsoft Applications (word, PowerPoint), IPOD, IPVO Camera*, and activboard.
9. I coach volleyball and always hook up an IPOD so the girls have music to listen to. After school I go on the internet quite a bit while watching television. I am on the computer/internet in the evening working on school related activities, researching information, and/or doing some shopping.
10. I feel the two biggest inappropriately and excessively used technologies out there by children and teachers are MySpace and Facebook. There is so much harm that comes from these websites, whether it is cyber bullying or an inappropriate relationship between a student and a teacher. These need to be restricted in some way shape or form. I also feel cell phones are excessively used by both teachers and students in and out of school. I feel cell phones could be a great tool to use in the classroom in a structured environment but I feel they are currently a distraction. We are too reliant on them.
About Dr. Shutkin:
11. What are your favorite activities outside of the classroom? Do you feel technology is needed to promote a higher level of learning in the classroom? For example, when I was growing up we had chalkboards and whiteboards and I feel I learned a great deal. Do we need this switch to such a technological society? Do you feel there is enough evidence out there showing that having activboards in the classroom enhances student performance?
